Experience

I'm an experienced English and English as a Second Language tutor. I have a Bachelor's degree in English, along with a certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of other Languages (TESOL). I then went on to continue my education and received my Master's in TESOL. I have had a significant amount of experience working in various settings and with a wide range of ages. I've worked a teacher's aide in an elementary school, a tutor in a middle school, and for a few years as a writing tutor and ESL teacher's aide at Central Washington University. I now work as an ESL instructor at Lake Washington Institute of Technology. My expertise is primarily with ESL students. I have learned how to help second-language English speakers to address language-specific errors. I have experience in the issues facing ESL instruction specifically, and education in general. I have worked with students from age 5 all the way through adult students, and so I have an understanding of how to adapt my instruction to different age groups. In my tutoring, I am a fan of using the Socratic method: asking questions that help students to find answers on their own. However, I also have a knowledge of when and how to provide my students with information that will be helpful to them. I believe students of all ages learn the most effectively when they are given strategies that they can apply to multiple areas of study. If you are an ESL student at any level of English language proficiency, or if you are a parent seeking an English, language arts, or social studies tutor for your K-12 student, I believe that I am the person you are looking for. I can help you and/or your child set reasonable goals to become more proficient in English, or to increase general writing and reading proficiency. You can expect that through my tutoring, you (or your child) will experience a noteworthy amount of growth in English proficiency. English proficiency will lead in turn to success in higher levels of education or in a career.
